My daughter Gracie May has Rett syndrome. Because of this, photographing kiddos with special needs has become kindof a thing for me.
Through photographing Grace, I learned and improvised methods and ways of photographing special kids to capture their fullness and not just their disability.
With not just one, but two kids with special needs (my son is autistic), I know that having a photo session for your family can be scary and stressful.
I know the frustration of a photographer shouting my daughter’s name to try to make her smile (buddy, it’s not gonna happen).
So take a deep breath and relax and know that I’ve got this. I know how hard it may have been just to get them dressed for these photos. I know you might feel pressured to help me get photos that are perfect.
Above all, I know that, for your family, these are more than just photos.

In 2008, when my daughter Grace was 11 months old, we found out that she had Rett syndrome .
I had no idea what that would mean for her and for our family, but it's probably better that way because —man— it's been HARD.
Now, Grace is a teenager. She has nurses taking care of her at home 24/7 and she's had a pretty hard life.
I was a photographer before she was born and naturally, because I had to learn how to photograph her, I became a pro at photographing kids with disabilities that affect their bodies, their eye gaze, their movement, and their attention span.
So, yeah...I get it. Your family deserves beautiful photos just like everyone else but it's hard. I gotchyu.
