As a wedding photographer in Central Florida, I know a lot about how to get married in Florida so I’m sharing it with all of you!
Whether you plan to get married in these Florida counties or not, you can get your license through their 100% online process and get married anywhere in Florida with that license. And yes, international couples can take advantage of this before their Florida holidays.
How to get a Florida marriage license online without visiting a courthouse
- Start this process ahead of time
You can get your Florida marriage license within 60 days of getting married. Depending on which clerk’s office you use, you may want to start the process of booking that Zoom appointment early.
According to couples of mine, when it came to making the virtual appointment, there were many same-day and next-day appointments available and it was very easy to make the appointment. - Decide which county clerk you will use for your online marriage appointment.
The counties in Florida that I know for sure do fully virtual marriage license appointments are Seminole County and Hillsborough County. It doesn’t matter where in Florida you are getting married. You can get your license in any Florida county.
Some factors in deciding: I’ve heard that international couples have a hard time paying with their non-US credit cards over the phone with the Seminole County Clerk. If you run into any trouble like this, and you’re already a client of mine, I’m happy to call them and make the payment on your behalf and then invoice you for it. - Complete the online marriage license application
Complete the Seminole County online marriage license application or the Hillsborough County online marriage license application.
- Make a Zoom appointment to finalize your marriage license application
For Seminole County, after submitting your Seminole County online marriage license application, schedule your virtual marriage license appointment here. It may appear to be an in-person appointment but fear not! As long as you made the application for the “virtual application” you can expect to receive your zoom link 5 minutes before your appointment time.
For Hillsborough County, you first complete the online application and then the clerks will send you an email confirming receipt of your application, and a link to schedule a video conference call using Zoom. - Have your Zoom meeting with the County Clerk
At the date and time you scheduled your meeting, you will log in via the meeting link to meet with a clerk who will validate your IDs, review your application with, take the payment, and have you electronically sign your marriage license. Both parties need to be present during this appointment.
I have had some international clients telling me they had trouble taking payment on their non-US credit card and if this is the case (and you’re my client) I’m happy to process payment on my end and invoice you. Let your virtual clerk know and send me their details so I can contact them to pay on your behalf. - Download your marriage license
Your marriage license will be emailed to you to download and print. It will also come with instructions for your officiant on how to sign it when they marry you. After your wedding, you will return the signed license to the County Clerk who stamps and certifies it. This can be returned in person or dropped in the mail. If you’re sending in the mail, remember that you have just 10 days to return it so drop it in the mail ASAP after your ceremony.
After getting your license, you can now get married! If you want to get your license and get married on the same day, you need to have proof that you took an online premarital course. If you’re not a Florida resident, you can get your license and get married on the same day without taking the course.
